Introduction
Non Wood Forest Products (NWFPs) are also often called Non-Timber Forest Products (NTFPs). The term 'non-timber forest product' encompasses all biological materials other than timber which are extracted from forests for human use. They are also called "extractive", "secondary" and "minor" forest products. In many parts of the world, these products still play an important biological and social role in local food systems. Forest foods provide a wide variety of nutrients: carbohydrates such as starches, fructose and other soluble sugars, protein, fats and micro-nutrients (vitamins and minerals).

They can also improve health through the prevention and treatment of diseases. Poor households residing or lesser extent on the exploitation of common property forest resources in their everyday life. Non wood Forest Product division was established in 1992 with the main aim of doing phyto-chemical investigation on arid zone flora for exploring their utilization. Azardiratchta indica, Balanites aegyptica. Catheranthus roseus, Commiphora wightii, Lawsonia inermis,Capparis decidua, Cassia angustifolia
Distribution of salt-affected soils is relatively more extensive in the arid and semi-arid regions. Normally these soils are unable to support vegetation due to their inhospitable conditions. Increasing population necessitated utilization of salty soils to fulfill the scarcity of fodder and fuel wood. Vast stretches (1.08 m ha) of salt affected soils are encountered in the arid tracts of Rajasthan, Gujarat, Haryana and Punjab states in India.
Experimental trials were established at Gangani salty area in Jodhpur to find out suitable plant species and best planting practices. Results are encouraging and could make the barren salt land productive.

Objectives
Revegetation of salt affected land through afforestation and improved management practices.
Phyto-chemical evaluation of various medicinal plants r for their sustainable utilization and value addition, conserving the biodiversity and improving income generation.
To screen and identify the arid zone flora for various NWFP's.
To develop technologies for enhanced gum production from arid zone flora.
